Which manufacturers product should I use for…?"

One of the most frequently asked questions in the field of home improvements - perhaps even the most frequently asked question is "which manufacturers product should I use for…?"

For instance: which is the best conservatory roof system, the best Low E glass, the best pvcu window, the best type of worktop, and the best make of kitchen? etc….

Take this recent question submitted by someone reviewing types of conservatory roofs. Our reply could just as easily be applied to a wide range of home improvement products:

Q. I have just had a chat with a conservatory supplier who says that a K2 roof is just as good as any other on the market including Quantal and Ultraframe, is this true?
Our Reply: Every salesperson has a story to tell and of course they are going to say that their product is best or as good as someone else's.

Do note however - It's the standard and quality of fit that will determine your ultimate satisfaction. We say this as frankly most products are of good quality - this applies to the pvcu extrusions, the roofs, the guttering etc.

When complaints arise its usually as a result of how the product is fitted - for instance, you could have one K2 roof superbly installed by one installer and be very happy while another makes a very bad job of the install and you will be unhappy. Your resultant satisfaction or dissatisfaction is not down to the K2 roof - but to the installer!

Check out the quality of installation - view some previous installations if you can. If off course you're doing the work yourself, then frankly the ultimate satisfaction is in your hands. Just make sure you go with a supplier who provides good technical support / instructions on installing.

Not that it really matters that much but we are fans of both the Ultraframe and Quantal roofs. We have found the support and backup technically very good. Other roof systems which we believe to have good reputations include, K2, PARK LANE, NEWDAWN, WENDLAND.

The above reply could be substituted for a great number of similar questions, for instance, which is the better PVC-U extrusion - Rehau, Profile 22 or Veka? Or which brand of low e glass should I have - Pilkington or Saint-Gobain Glass?

Yes, each supplier / manufacturer may have some unique features and benefits and of course it's possible you may like the look and style of one over another - but please try to not get drawn into a "spec war" - deal only in facts - compare like with like when you can but in the end realise that what matters most is the quality of install and service. View previous work, ask about the warranty offered, these are the things that really matter in the end!

If you based your FINAL buying decision on which roof system or which pvcu window extrusion to use alone there is a good chance that you may well be missing the most important point - the quality of installation and the after sales service!
