Building a conservatory in Northern Ireland

Northern Ireland has a high rate of owner-occupation and many detached houses and bungalows outside Belfast, with the space for a gable front or a bespoke shape. Belfast's Victorian terraces suit a lean-to. Planning is handled by the councils, so ask yours about the rules for a conservatory before you order.

uPVC is common on the post-war and recent houses, and aluminium is growing on the larger, more modern builds. Timber suits the older stone and brick houses. Northern Ireland has its own Building Regulations, separate from England and Scotland, so check what applies before choosing a frame.

The climate is mild, wet and windy, with rain and storms along the north and east coasts. A glass roof is quieter in the rain than polycarbonate, and a solid roof is quieter still. Wind loading matters on exposed sites, so ask how the roof is fixed to the frame.

Mild winters make a conservatory usable for much of the year, and doors that open onto the garden get plenty of use. French and sliding doors are the usual choices, and bifold doors suit a larger orangery. Many English funding and installer schemes do not extend here, so ask local firms directly.

Northern Ireland has the highest rate of owner-occupation in the UK and a newer housing stock than most of Great Britain, with a large share of post-war and recent detached houses and bungalows outside Belfast. Belfast itself retains substantial Victorian terraced streets. The defining feature is fuel: around two thirds of homes are heated by oil rather than mains gas, far more than anywhere else in the UK.

Planning and building rules in Northern Ireland

Northern Ireland has its own Building Regulations, separate from both England and Scotland, and its own planning system administered by the eleven councils. Guidance written for England does not apply. Several Great Britain funding schemes do not extend here at all, which changes the economics of energy work substantially.

The weather

Mild, wet and windy, with rainfall above the UK average and few extremes of temperature in either direction. The mild winters shorten the heating season. Wind is the more demanding factor, particularly along the north and east coasts, where exposed sites take the full force of winter storms.
