Building a conservatory in Yorkshire and the Humber

Yorkshire's gritstone terraces and back-to-backs have little or no garden, and many have a yard rather than a lawn. A small lean-to is often the only style that fits. Larger houses in the Dales and the suburbs of Leeds, Sheffield and York can take a Victorian or an Edwardian conservatory.

Stone houses look best with a timber or dark aluminium frame that echoes the window joinery. York, the mill-town conservation areas and the National Parks all expect materials to match the setting. uPVC is common on the brick-built suburbs of Hull and Sheffield, where the council rarely objects.

The Pennine edge takes driving rain and cold winds, and a roof there has to be properly fixed and well insulated. Polycarbonate roofs struggle in the colder, wetter west of the region, where a glass roof with a good thermal rating or a solid roof gives a usable room through the winter.

Many Yorkshire homes have views of the moors or the dales, and wide doors make the most of them. Bifold and sliding doors suit the larger houses, and French doors fit the stone cottages. Exposed hillsides need strong frames and good seals against the weather.

The West Riding is built in gritstone, and Leeds and Bradford retain back-to-back terraces that exist almost nowhere else in England. These have no rear access, no cavity and shared walls on three sides, which complicates access for almost any job. Sheffield and the eastern towns are more conventionally brick-built, and Hull has a large interwar estate stock.

Planning and building rules in Yorkshire and the Humber

The Yorkshire Dales, North York Moors and part of the Peak District are National Parks, all with strict external controls. York is one of the most heavily conserved cities in the country, and the West Riding mill towns hold large conservation areas where stone and slate must be matched.

The weather

Drier in the east than the Pennine west, where rainfall rises sharply with height and exposure. Stone properties on the Pennine edge take driving rain on their western elevations and need the pointing to be right. Frost is more frequent than in the south, so freeze-thaw damage to pointing is a recurring cause of repair work.
